Incorporating prayer into your beauty routine might seem a silly thing to do. Most of us are just trying to make ourselves look presentable. We simply wish to look our best for the day. Why bother with prayer while putting on lip gloss? Why invite the Holy Spirit to be present while curling our hair or doing our nails? Does Christ really care about our sparkly eye shadow? The answer might surprise you.
Corinthians 10:31 ESV says: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” That includes what you do in your bathroom mirror, as you prepare yourself to look your best for the day.
Try to think of the benefits of bringing the goodness of God into one of your most intimate moments in life—your daily beauty routine. As you strive to make yourself look your best for the day, be prayerful. You might pray, “Holy Spirit, guide me as I prepare myself to look my best for the day.” Or you can be more specific: “Lord, let this eyeliner bring out the light in my eyes, the light of your love, so that it might shine forth and show your goodness to all those around me.”
The results are stunning. Suddenly as you apply ordinary mascara, you realize you are emphasizing the beauty that God gave you and you feel a deep gratitude for what you have. You add a little contouring to your cheekbones, and you know you are accentuating the beauty that God has graced you with. You give Him all the glory—and the goodness of this feeling shines through your appearance. You look and feel your best all day, because that’s what God wants for you. There is no shame in highlighting the beauty God has given to you! Especially if you consciously and purposefully give him praise for it.
Try this! Be prayerful throughout your beauty routine! You will soon recognize the Holy Spirit shining through, and you will notice, as will others, a more elevated, glorious, and spiritual beauty has become instantly available to you. Glory to God!
